Outstanding and Very Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Advertising Jug with Profuse Cobalt Star and Foliate Decorations, Stamped "JOHN MILLAR / CHEAP CASH STORE / LEORIGNAL CW", Canadian origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jug with tooled shoulder, squared spout, and applied handle, the front featuring a lavish slip-trailed design with central foliate motif surrounded by stars and a looping line border, above slip-trailed star, above a series of spotted pyramidal designs with scrolled ends. Brushed cobalt highlights to advertising. With its outstanding large size, bold decoration, and appealing "CHEAP CASH STORE" advertising, this jug is the finest example of Canadian stoneware we have ever offered. The "CW" on this jug refers to "Canada West", which was the colony of Upper Canada that would become the Province of Ontario in 1867. ("Leorignal" is a typo for L'Orignal, Ontario.) Very nice condition with a hairline through handle and two spout chips. H 18 1/2".
