One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "JOHN B. CAIRE & CO. / MAIN ST PO.KEEPSIE N.Y.", circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with a stylized slip-trailed foliate design with scrolled leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Desirable size with strong color. Several tiny rim chips on reverse. A 1 1/2" glazed-over iron ping on side of jar. A short, faint line from rim on reverse. An approximately 2 3/4" Y-shaped surface line on side of jar, not visible on interior. Some bubbling to cobalt.
