Rare Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Bird Decoration and 1878 Date, probably Midwestern, 1878, approximately three-gallon, cylindrical form with rounded shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, the base with applied circular bunghole. Decorated on the front with a folky solid-cobalt design of a bird perched on a stylized branch. Although the bird's legs are brushed in cobalt they are additionally incised into the clay. Slip-trailed above with the underscored date, "1878". Excellent form and unusual design. Provenance: Consigned from Maine. Rim chips. A few minor nicks to bunghole. A small, in-the-firing contact mark to branch design. H 14".
