Outstanding and Rare Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Incised Foliate Decoration, Ohio origin, circa 1840-1860, approximately one-and-a-half to two-gallon pitcher of unusual squat form with footed base, flared rim, and ribbed strap handle, the front decorated with a large incised design of a vine-like plant bearing numerous leaves. The larger leaves of the design include incised vein detail. Cobalt highlights throughout incising and accenting the handle terminals. Excellent form and wonderful decoration. Pieces with incised motifs produced in the state of Ohio are considered unusual. The foliate design on this example reveals a highly-skilled decorator familiar with the technique. Heavy shallow chipping to base, which appears to be glazed-over and in-the-firing. A spout chip. H 11".
