Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Churn, Stamped "ORCUTT AND WAIT / WHATELY," Massachusetts origin, circa 1817, narrow, cylindrical churn with tooled shoulder, and large rounded lug handles, featuring the cobalt-highlighted signature of Stephen Orcutt and Luke and Obediah Wait at the shoulder. Additional cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent form and color, featuring a desirable early Massachusetts maker's mark. Provenance: Found decades ago in the northeastern U.S. Two 19th century lead repairs to underside, one measuring approximately 1 3/4" on underside and another measuring approximately 1/2" on underside. Two base chips. One small rim chip. A contact mark to shoulder on reverse.
