Exceptional Eight-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Stenciled Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES. / STAR POTTERY / GREENSBORO, PA.," circa 1875, large-sized, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated around the shoulder with a detailed stenciled flowering vine design, which mimics the classic freehand decorations of the region. Additional freehand drape decoration below rim. Decorated below with a stenciled star design, surrounding by "Star Pottery" maker's stenciling and flanked by roses. Base with a larger stenciled "8" flanked by stenciled flourishes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with staining around bottom half of jar.
