Very Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Eagle and Banner, Inscribed "EAGLE POTTERY" and "J.B. HEZLEP / TURTLE CREEK / PA.," Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with a large stenciled design of a spread-winged eagle holding a banner inscribed, "EAGLE POTTERY". Shoulder stenciled "J.B. HEZLEP / TURTLE CREEK / PA". Surface decorated with freehand stripes, along with swags at the shoulder and stenciled "3" at base. Cobalt highlight to upper handle terminal. A fine example of rare advertising combined with the maker's signature, featuring the classic Western PA stenciled eagle motif. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in the Southern U.S. A 1 1/2" chip to top of rim. A flake to spout on reverse. Glazed-over stone ping on side of jug. Spider lines on underside, continuing onto base. Some other faint surface lines, probably in-the-firing.
