Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA.," circa 1870, ovoid jar with semi-squared rim and a high-set lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a large sweeping tulip vine design in the Swank style. Unusual decoration under one handle features a freehand cobalt "4" underscored by a large looping line. Impressed under opposite handle with Swank maker's mark above a four-gallon capacity mark and four cobalt stripes. Additional leaf-like brushwork to the handle terminals. Some fry to cobalt. A 2 1/8" rim chip and additional smaller rim chips. A chip to each handle.
