Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA," circa 1870, cylindrical for with semi-rounded rim and small, applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a distinctive brushed vertical swag designs. Leaf-like cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Large brushed "1 1/2" under one handle, underscored by three cobalt stripes. Highly unusual decoration of a tulip brushed in light cobalt on the underside of crock. A fine example of a lesser-seen form in Swank pottery. Excellent condition with only minor flaws.
