Rare Six-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Iron Slip Decoration, Stamped "CHANDLER MAKER," Thomas Chandler, Edgefield, SC, circa 1850, large-sized, ovoid jar with large tab handles and flared rim, the surface covered in a streaky greenish alkaline glaze and decorated with an iron slip looping line design extending completely around the shoulder. Slip-trailed "6" on front. Excellent size. Classic Chandler form and decoration. Restoration to a large vertical Y-shaped crack under one handle, extending onto underside. Several cracks on underside, with partially coloring. Horizontal cracks at base, some of which are restored. Base chip. H 16 1/2".
