Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Canning Jar, Stamped "T R WADDELL / VA.," Thomas R. Waddell, Alleghany County, VA, circa 1850, cylindrical jar with tall, narrow collar and semi-rounded rim, the front featuring the maker's mark of Thomas R. Waddell of Alleghany County, VA. Excellent form and size, measuring approximately one-quart to one-half-gallon. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in the Midwestern U.S. A 5/8" rim chip on reverse with a faint 1 1/2" hairline extending through it. A few other minor rim chips. Shallow chipping to base. A large in-the-firing contact mark to left of maker's mark. H 8".
