Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, attributed to John Poole Schermerhorn, Richmond, VA, circa 1830, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed cobalt "4" underscored with an S-shaped flourish. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a Southeastern Virginia collection amassed decades ago. Exfoliation to surface. Chips and wear to rim. Some faint, minor surface lines near base.
