Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, attributed to Henry Remmey, Sr., Baltimore, MD, circa 1815, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, squared rim, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate design with hollow-centered leaves. Heavy circular cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Distinctive impressed two-gallon capacity mark under one handle, which matches that found on a signed "H. REMMEY / BALTIMORE" jar. This jar, perhaps more than any other piece of Baltimore stoneware, exemplifies the Manhattan style of decorating, which Henry Remmey brought to Baltimore in 1812. The superb light color of the local Baltimore clay and brilliant cobalt decoration can also be found on some of Remmey's best work during his tenure in the city. This jar serves as an important link between two of the country's most influential pottery centers. Provenance: Found decades ago in the northeastern U.S. A 3 1/4" long L-shaped reglued piece at base/underside. Additional thin cracks on underside and base, including a thin ctrack that extends 4 1/2" up from base on side of jar, and another faint line that extends approximately 4 1/2" up front of jar. A minor chip on interior of rim and an iron ping on interior of jar near rim.
