Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "F.J. CAIRE / Huntington / L.I.," New York State origin, circa 1854-1863, squat-shaped jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a heavily-brushed, abstract design of two tulips flanking a series of spots. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Literature: Pictured on p. 40 of USEFUL ART: LONG ISLAND POTTERY, Cynthia Arps Corbett, Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1985. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a few short, faint lines at base.
