Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Berries Decoration, Stamped "BROWN. BROTHERS / HUNTINGTON. L.I.," circa 1863-1870, cylindrical crock with tooled body, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of six berries extending from a central stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. One of the most artistic brush decorations known on a piece of Huntington stoneware. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Literature: Cynthia Arps Corbett, USEFUL ART: LONG ISLAND POTTERY, Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1985. Pictured and discussed on p. 42, this crock is described as one of two known with berry decoration at the time of the book's writing. A 4" hairline from rim on reverse of crock. Some bubbling to cobalt. Otherwise excellent condition.
