Exceptional Slip-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Applied Tree and Grape Vine Decoration, probably Ohio origin, late 19th century, ovoid pitcher with tooled shoulder and flared rim, the surface profusely-decorated with an applied clay design of trees flanking two opposing grape vines. Surface covered in a dark Albany slip glaze over whitish clay and decorated with highly unusual yellow slip spots. A wonderful example of ceramic folk art. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in the Midwestern U.S. Three rim chips. A loss to one tree leaf, a chip to one tree leaf, and a chip to vine. H 7 7/8".
