Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J.A. & C.W. UNDERWOOD / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.," circa 1865-1867, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a long-tailed bird with crest, perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A 1" x 3/4" chip to left side of spout. A 3 7/8" in-the-firing contact mark on right side of jug, which includes a 1" shallow flake and some adhered clay. A 2 1/2" in-the-firing flake / contact mark to base. A small chip to underside at edge. Some innocuous, minuscule flakes to jug. A small piece of clay adhered to base on reverse.
