Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "N. White. / Utica," New York State origin, circa 1840, highly-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a brushed cobalt "2" underscored by a stylized wreath. Brushed cobalt stripe through maker's mark. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. A faint 1 1/4" line extending partway through lower handle terminal. A glazed-over 1 1/2" surface line on reverse of spout. Minor spout wear. Two typical in-the-firing contact marks.
