Outstanding Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, New York State origin, circa 1870, large-sized, ovoid pitcher with tooled shoulder and flared rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with long tail and spotted body, perched on a stylized tree stump. Excellent size, form, and decoration. Few bird-decorated stoneware pitchers of this size are known. Chip to left side of spout. Other minor in-the-firing flaws, including a minor in-the-firing chip to side of pitcher. two minor, glazed-over base chips, and some in-the-firing roughness to top edge of rim. H 12 3/4".
