Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Bold Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a large pheasant with turned head and long tail, perched on a tree stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. An iconic Norton design, measuring an impressive 11" tall. Spout chips, the largest measuring 1 1/8". An in-the-making dent to left side of spout, which is glazed-over. Some light wear/roughness to surface. A small stone ping to right of decoration. Some minor chips to underside at edge.
