Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Stump-Form Umbrella Stand with Reclining Dog, Stamped "F.B. NORTON & CO. / WORCESTER, MASS.," circa 1886, finely-molded umbrella stand in the form of an ivy covered tree stump, the base with large reclining cairn terrier surrounded by ferns, flowers, and shrubs. Base stamped "F.B. NORTON & CO. / WORCESTER, MASS.". According to Kevin Daughney, company historian for The Norton Co. in Worcester, MA, from 1980-1999, few umbrella stands of this form were made. Seven were made circa 1886 as parting gifts for the seven Worcester residents who purchased the grinding wheel division from potter, Frank Norton. When the division was relocated from the pottery to the north end of Worcester, the seven umbrella stands were presented to the division's new owners. The exact number of terrier umbrella stands that were ever produced by the F.B. Norton Pottery is currently unknown. Including the stand offered in this auction, Daughney has located eight total examples. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor years ago. Chip to leaf behind dog. Loss to one of dog's ears. A fairly innocuous, in-the-firing separation where dog meets body of stand. Firing crack in underside. An additional firing crack to base, mostly visible on underside. with associated chip. Other lines to surface, most or all of which appear to be in-the-firing. H 24".
