Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Decoration, Incised "D.L. Clawson," Manhattan, New York or New Jersey origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed drape-and-dot motif in the Crolius style. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Incised in script under one handle "D.L. Clawson". While the identity of D.L. Clawson remains a mystery, the manner of inscription suggests it is probably the potter’s signature. Relatively few pieces from this time period are known with inscribed names, either a potter or the person for whom the jar was made. Provenance: Found decades ago in the northeastern U.S. Excellent condition with some traces of old green paint and some staining.
