Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Presentation Cake Crock, Stamped "M WOODRUFF / CORTLAND," New York State origin, circa 1867-1869, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed looping vine design bearing three flower blossoms. Slip-trailed with the large name "Henry Boynton" below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Unusual form and desirable presentation inscription. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a collection amassed during the 1980s, consigned to this auction. Excellent condition with some staining to surface, primarily on reverse, and a small, glazed-over rim nick.
