Scarce One-Gallon Crock with Cobalt Starburst Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG. PA," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a boldly-brushed design of a starburst or star-shaped blossom with bull's eye center. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Excellent size, decoration, and color, featuring some of the strongest cobalt we have seen on a piece of Cowden stoneware. 5" inverted Y-shaped crack from rim on reverse.
