Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an exuberant flowering plant design featuring a large four-petaled blossom surrounded by rays of leaves, a daisy, two buds, and a leafy base. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Provenance: Part of a collection consigned to this auction, which was assembled during the 1980s. Two 3 1/2" hairlines from rim on reverse. A minor chip on top of rim. Some spots of staining.
