Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Floral and Hanging Fruit Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, the front featuring a very large slip-trailed design of a flower blossom with heavily-shaded petals and abstract center resembling a clock face. Decoration continues below with a pinwheel-shaped blossom and large vine bearing four pieces of fruit. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. A wonderfully-decorated example using a rare slip-trailing technique for this maker and exhibiting strong New York State influence. The strength of the decoration is compounded by the impressive large size of the jug. 9" vertical crack on side of jug, extending from base. A few minor base chips and some light surface wear to base area. An in-the-firing, 3/4" contact mark to handle. Some light staining.
