Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865. cylindrical jar with flared rim, applied lug handles, and tooling to midsection and collar, the front decorated with a large brushed design of a human face with long nose and frown, surrounded by crescent-shaped foliate decoration. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. A crisp example of an iconic Cowden & Wilcox motif. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased years ago by the consignor's mother. A 4" crack on underside, extending 9" up side of jar. A shallow rim chip. Chips to inner rim where a lid would rest. Some staining to reverse.
