Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Horse Head Decoration, Stamped "UNION POTTERY / NEWARK N.J. / J. ZIPF, Prop'r," circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a folky slip-trailed design of a horse with stylized mane. Slip-trailed "2" over maker's mark. This crock is the first example of horse decoration from this pottery we have seen. Very nice condition. A shallow 1 1/8" flake to interior of rim, along with a few other minor chips on interior of rim. A minor flake to right side of crock. Two minor iron pings on interior of crock. The words "NEWARK, N.J." within maker's mark are barely present.
