Possibly Unique Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar, Inscribed "This is 1860," Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO," PA origin, 1860, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder and narrow mouth, decorated around the shoulder with sponged cobalt over a whitish slip ground. Midsection incised with the sentence "This is 1860", the meaning of which is currently unknown, but possibly a reference to the United States Presidential Election of 1860, involving Abraham Lincoln and John C. Breckenridge. Shoulder impressed with John Bell maker's mark. A highly unusual example of dated John Bell stoneware. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in the Midwestern U.S. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a few typical in-the-firing burns and contact marks. H 9 1/4".
