Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid form with applied tubular pouring spout and metal-and-wood bail handle, profusely decorated with a fern-like foliate design flanking the maker's mark, along with a leaf underneath. Base of spout decorated with a cobalt wreath. Reverse decorated with a brushed flower composed of graduated daubs of cobalt. Additional cobalt highlights to handle terminals, ears, and maker's mark. A striking example of Harrisburg stoneware, with excellent form, decoration, and color. Includes tin covers of unknown age. Very nice overall condition, with a shallow chip to edge of spout, a 1" chip to underside at edge, some very minor wear to shoulder molding on reverse, and some light fry to cobalt leaf at base on front and highlights to handle terminals on reverse. Taped repair to interior of tin spout cover.
