Rare Urn-Shaped Redware Flowerpot with Incised Decoration, American, possibly Galena, IL, second half 19th century, ovoid flowerpot with flared base, arched tab handles, and coved rim with crimped molding. Surface covered in a lead glaze over a colorful olive ground with orange spotting. One side decorated with a lightly-incised design of a leafy plant, measuring approximately 5" tall. Original drain hole in underside. Color and thickness of flowerpot are consistent with products of Galena, Illinois. Rim molding, which involves a crimped section below and semi-rounded rim, is related to that found on a Galena tapered flowerpot sold in our March 2, 2013 auction. 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" in-the-firing base chip, which is partially glazed over. Chips and wear to handles and rim. H 9 1/2".
