Very Rare New Jersey Redware Milkpan with Incised Itemization and Pinprick Signature, "W.J. Smith, Jr.," Bridgeton, NJ, circa 1865-1895, tapered pan with pouring spout, incised shoulder, and lead-glazed interior, the shoulder featuring the signature of Bridgeton, NJ potter, W.J. Smith, Jr., composed of a series of small incised dots. Underside with an itemized list totalling $45.00, reading "5.00 overs [(?), possibly overalls] / 3.50 hat / $1.50 gloves / 10.00 Board / 4.00 Board / 1.50 Phila / 5.00 Belvedere / $45.00." Given that this list includes both clothing, board (lodgings), and what appears to be travel expenses, it is likely that Smith was figuring up how much to deduct from a worker's pay for items and services advanced to him. A highly unusual example of New Jersey redware, with interesting insight into the potter's life. Wear to rim and light wear to interior. 3 3/4" hairline from rim. H 4 1/2" ; Diameter 9 3/4".
