Extremely Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt Turtle Decoration, Stamped "D. Ack / Mooresburg, Pa.," circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, decorated with a folky design of a turtle with elongated neck, composed of heavy cobalt brushwork. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. One of the finest examples of Mooresburg, PA stoneware known, and one of a very few stoneware pieces in existence with cobalt decoration of a turtle. Literature: Pictured in Phil Schaltenbrand, BIG WARE TURNERS, p. 64. Rim chips. 1 1/4" in-the-firing separation at base, continuing 1" onto underside, not visible on interior.
