Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "From Philip Eiler / East Birmingham POTTERY," Pittsburgh, PA origin, circa 1863-1873, ovoid jar with squared rim, featuring the large stenciled signature of Philip Eiler within a dashed border, surrounded by freehand brushwork. Brushed cobalt stripe below rim and script "2" at base. Excellent color and difficult-to-find maker's mark. Y-shaped crack on underside, which continues as a series of fairly-tight spider cracks approximately 4 3/4" up reverse of jar. An additional very faint 3" surface line to shoulder on front, not visible on the interior and presumably in-the-firing.
