Rare Stoneware Face Vessel in the Form of an African-American Man's Bust, probably Ohio, fourth quarter 19th century, wheel-thrown jug in the form of a man's bust, with hand-modeled and incised facial features, including ears, hair, long sideburns, nose, and mouth, the eyes and teeth carved into the clay after the slip was applied. Remainder of jug in the form of a jacketed human torso with raised collar and buttoned front. Strap handle on reverse. Majority of surface covered in a reddish-brown Albany slip glaze. Outstanding form. Nineteenth-century American stoneware face vessels are considered rare and highly-prized objects among folk art and stoneware collectors alike. Chip to each ear. Loss to button or other applied object below chin. H 7 1/4".
