One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.," circa 1835, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, decorated with an elaborately-brushed vine bearing four blossoms and leaves extending around the body of the jar. Reverse with brushed wavy line at shoulder. Shoulder impressed with an error one-and-a-half-gallon capacity marking, which reads "1/2 1", indicating the jar was marked with both the Wilkes Street Pottery's half-gallon capacity mark and one-gallon capacity mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in a Delaware home. Very nice condition with a faint 4" vertical line at midsection on front, possibly in-the-firing, two glazed-over rim chips, and two minor in-the-firing contact marks near base on reverse.
