Very Rare Glazed Redware Nest-Form Sugar Bowl with Bird Finial Lid, probably Mid-Atlantic origin, circa 1860-1890, ovoid sugar bowl in the form of nest seated in the crook of a tree with heavily-incised bark and nest detail. Lid with incised surface and large applied bird finial with spread wings, clay ball eyes, and blackish lead-and-manganese glaze. Remainder of lid and bowl covered in a clear lead glaze over an orange, iron-flecked ground. This sugar bowl is the first example we have seen in a whimsical nest form. It bears similarities in form and rustic embellishments to the work of Anthony Bacher of Adams County, PA, Thurmont, MD, and Winchester, VA, although it appears to be by a different hand. Possibly produced by a potter influenced by, or working with, Anthony Bacher. Provenance: Recently found in Virginia. Large repairs to bird's wings, tail, and beak. Otherwise excellent condition. H (including lid) 7 1/2".
