Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Swag and Tassel Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAWS STONEWARE," Thomas Commeraw, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1810, cylindrical jar with heavily-tooled base, rounded shoulder accented with tooled lines, and narrow opening with semi-rounded rim. Circumference of jar decorated with an impressed drape and tassel design, highlighted in cobalt slip. Impressed on one side with the maker's mark, "COMMERAWS STONEWARE", accented lightly with cobalt. This jar is the first Thomas Commeraw example of this form we have offered. Comparatively few cylindrical jars by Commeraw are known. Sealed Y-shaped crack in underside, extending up right side of jar nearly to rim. This crack forms a cross on the body of the jar with a long horizontal section extending to the right side of the front and left side of the reverse. Two additional thin cracks extend off of the Y on the underside partway around the base of the jar. Tiny nick to base. H 11 1/2".
