Exceptional Stoneware Lid with Profuse Slip-Trailed Cobalt Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1840, decorated with wavy cobalt lines girded by circular bands, the area surrounding the knob additionally decorated with cobalt spots. Decoration is possibly inspired by imported English mochaware of the period. A striking design, executed in brilliant color. One of the finest Baltimore stoneware lids known. 1 3/8" chip to edge. An in-the-firing iron ping to top surface. An additional 1 3/8" chip to flange on underside. Other small and minor chips to flange on underside. Diameter 9".
