Extremely Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised and Impressed Foliate Decorations, Stamped "J. REMMEY. / NEW-YORK," John Remmey III, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1810, ovoid jar with footed base, nicely-tooled shoulder, and slightly-flared rim, impressed with the large cobalt-highlighted maker's mark, "J. REMMEY. / NEW-YORK" at the shoulder, above a highly unusual impressed one-and-a-half-gallon capacity mark and two well-detailed leaves. Reverse decorated with a large incised and cobalt-highlighted foliated design emanating from an oval or fruit. This jar is the first example of John Remmey III stoneware we have seen with an impressed leaf design or impressed capacity mark. It ranks among the very best examples of John Remmey III stoneware we have ever offered. Provenance: Recently found in the Southern U.S. Very nice condition for pieces by this maker. Small rim chips. A 1 1/2" line from rim, barely visible on exterior. A 1" chip on underside at edge with a 2 1/2" surface line extending throughout it only on underside, not visible on interior. A minor base nick. H 10".
