Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BURGER / ROCHESTER," New York State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an artistic slip-trailed design of a flowering plant with alternating shaded and hollow petals, trumpet-shaped center to left blossom, and nicely-detailed leaves. Script cobalt "3." above. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. One of the finer Burger floral motifs to come to auction in recent years. Excellent condition with a 2 3/4" surface line from rim on front, not visible on interior, and a minor glazed-over iron ping at base on reverse.
