Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Heart and 1863 Date Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA," New York State origin, third quarter 19th century, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed foliate design surrounding the date "1863" with flowers below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A striking design with desirable Civil War period date. 9" crack from rim on reverse. 3" in-the-firing contact mark with adhered piece of clay on side of churn. Some fry to cobalt. A hairline running along one handle, along with a chip to same handle. Some shallow chipping to end of opposite handle. Typical wear to inner rim where a lid would sit. Two iron pings.
