Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Steamship Decoration, Stamped "W. ROBERTS / BINGHAMTON, NY," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a folky slip-trailed design of a steamship with flag and billowing smoke stack atop stylized water. An unusual design in American stoneware, particularly when found on pieces from this time period. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased years ago in the Northeastern U.S. In-the-firing bubbling to cobalt. A few chips on interior of rim. A 6 3/4" crack from rim on reverse, extending from a small rim chip. An additional thin 3 1/4" crack from rim on reverse.
