Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.," circa 1840, ovoid pitcher with short collar and tooled rim molding, decorated with two large flowers extending from leafy stems. Reverse decorated with a two brushed leaves. Collar decorated with large brushed chainlinks. Impressed below spout with H.C. Smith mark below a one-gallon capacity mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently discovered in the Pacific Northwest. Thin cracks in underside, one of which extends onto base area. Exfoliation around base. Two salt drips to one side, near base. A 1" shallow chip to rim molding above handle. Some wear and nicks to rim molding as well as molding at base of collar. A minor 3/4" hairline to rim molding on side of pitcher. Vertical strip of wear along spout. Some light wear to handle.
