Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "B.C. MILBURN / ALEXA," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1850, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a leafy stem bearing two different types of flowers. Additional scalloped circle decoration at the ends of each handle. Wavy slip-trailed line below rim. Reverse with three connected flowers at the shoulder. A good example of Milburn's desirable slip-trailed decoration. The use of two different flowers hanging from the horizontal stem is unusual among signed Milburn examples. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased years ago in New York State. Chips to one handle. Smaller, shallower chips to opposite handle. Long, sealed spider crack from rim on reverse. Thin, tight crack extending across underside and several inches up reverse. A few minor base chips and nicks.
