Extremely Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed Bird Decoration, Stamped "J FENTON," Jonathan Fenton, Dorset, VT, circa 1800-1810, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, slip-coated surface, and shoulder decorated with a coggled vertical bar design. Front of jug decorated with an impressed design of a bird highlighted in dark cobalt slip, with added brushed bough below. Shoulder impressed with the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark "J. FENTON", below the the incised and cobalt-highlighted mark "1/3". (While this jug is incised "1/3", its capacity is certainly closer to one-gallon.) Additional cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Few examples of this quality from Jonathan Fenton's early Dorset, Vermont operation are known. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with two in-the-firing surface chips / contact marks and minor wear to spout. H 12".
