Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Stenciled Cobalt Eagle Decoration, Stamped "J.C. WAELDE. / NORTH BAY," New York State origin, circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and lug handles, decorated with a crisp and dark stenciled design of a Federal eagle with spread wings and turned head, perched atop a slip-trailed branch. Eagle decoration is applied by sponging the cobalt, giving the figure a visually-appealing dappled texture. Slip-trailed "2" with dashes above. Brushed highlights to maker's mark. The eagle motif is one of the rarer North Bay stenciled designs. This example is the first we have ever offered. 7 1/4" vertical crack extending under right handle onto underside. Otherwise excellent condition with some staining to right side of crock under handle.
