Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Exuberant Cobalt Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1845, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a very large, heavily-brushed flowering plant extending up the front and reverse, culminating in two fan-shaped blossoms. Heavy cobalt highlights to handle terminals. One of the finest examples of brushed floral decoration we have seen on a Baltimore stoneware jar. The color of the decoration and clay ground are likewise exceptional. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a faint 2 3/4" line to front, presumably in-the-firing, and a glazed-over separation at one handle terminal.
