Rare Glazed Redware Jug with Coggled Decoration, Incised "John Cox / Alburgh / Mill," English, 19th century, small-sized, ovoid jug with footed base, rounded spout, and coggled vine decoration in two rows around the body. Jug is deeply incised in script "John Cox / Alburgh / Mill". Surface covered in a lead glaze over a mottled orange ground. While this jug resembles American earthenware, research reveals the presence of an "Alburgh Mill" in Alburgh, Norfolk County, England, run by the Cox family from roughly the late 1850's until the very early 1900's. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a Texas collection consigned to this auction. Poorly-restored handle. 1 1/2" line on underside, continuing 1 1/8" up front. Glazed-over, in-the-firing lines to shoulder area. Small shallow chip and light wear to spout. H 6 1/4".
