Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITE'S UTICA," New York State origin, circa 1870, cylindrical crock with lug handles, decorated with a folky slip-trailed design of a crested bird with striped body and spotted wing, perched on the stem of a flowering plant. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Professional restoration to section of rim on front. An inverted Y-shaped hairline, which extends through the tip of the bird's beak, is also colored. However, none of the cobalt has been touched up. A Y-shaped crack on underside. This crack continues onto the base in two places, where it is professionally restored. Restoration is visible below the bird's tail, with touch-up to the far left edge of the branch on which the bird is perched. Restoration is also visible to an area 4 1/4" up from base to the bird's right. The Albany slip on the interior also appears to be repainted. An additional faint, approximately 2 1/4" X-shaped line on front, to left of decoration. A short hairline from rim above right handle. A very short hairline in rim above left handle. A 3" hairline from rim on reverse. In-the-firing chip to left handle. A small in-the-firing chip to rim.
